Apparently, Brock Olivo did not do well in social studies class. And presumably, he was even worse in history.
Asked to name his favorite of the Founding Fathers, our favorite former football star turned heinously awkward political candidate has a terrific answer:
"Abraham Lincoln".
In his defense, another candidate said "Ronald Reagan", an answer in which I am really trying to see the funny side. Even Brock himself didn't name Reagan as his fave founder (although to be fair, he almost did).
The Repubs actually have two serious candidates, Bob Onder and Blaine Luetkemeyer, and they better be praying with all their might that they don't split the vote and enable one of these two maroons to win the primary.
Sorry about the long delay. In my last diary I made the argument that rather than just announcing his choice Vice Presidential candidate, Obama should also announce the three most influential cabinet members: the Secretaries of State and Defense and the Attorney General. I then went on to explain why former Senator Bill Bradley would be the best choice for Vice President.
In this post I will expand on the benefits of announcing the cabinet members and present my choice for Attorney General...
I was going to post a response to gailwmcdonald's diary but my comment was so long, I realized I was better off making this its own diary.
Like most of you, the very idea of racism makes me irate. But I have found that if a person can stay calm, cool and collected that you can make headway when dealing with a racist. Here are my tips. If you have any learnings or feedback, please reply in the comment field.
Today on NPR's Fresh Air, Terry Gross interviewed Douglas Holtz-Eakin. Terry asked about McCain's economic knowledge and Holtz-Eakin gave a very interesting answer:
Terry Gross - John McCain has said that the economy is not his strong point. That he doesn't know that much about the economy. Is that a fatal flaw for a president? Does it matter?
Douglas Holtz-Eakin: He has a phenominal grasp of the economy and the remark he made is self-depricating. That's John McCain in his truest form. But he is comparing himself to a standard of excellence on international affairs and national security that no one could meet. He's the preminent expert in those areas. He's been the chair of the commerce committee. He's a superb policy maker on economics and the US economy is in good hands with John McCain.
Chris Matthews on Hardball has promised to interpret some recent polls in the worst way possible (for us Obama supporters). What he has done is cherry picked the worst possible polls (from our perspective), ready to pound them!
So, here at the clinic, we're giving free vaccinations for the Hardball show coming on tomorrow!
Please tip your health care professional as I am working hard for you (and packing away for my move)!
Found interesting fun discussion of Veepstakes MSNBC !
In past elections, the Bush/Rove team undercut, back stabbed and push polled John McCain's campaign without mercy, limits nor reservations. Now, we are supposed to believe that they are "good friends"? Mr. McCain has attempted to become the nominee in past elections and has been viciously attacked by his own party's hard core base. The primary leading to his nomination this election cycle was no exception to that historical precedent. Right wing talk radio and pundits were seen to join Mitt Romney's campaign and Mike Huckabee's campaign in attacking the authenticity of McCain's conservative credentials, his "Republicaness" if you will. Once again, completely out of touch with the average voter and America at large (even the average Republican voter, perhaps), the far right wing of the Republican party pushed McCain and the other candidates as far to the right as possible to appeal to the base. This is fairly typical of a primary fight, one must acknowledge, and McCain, of course, managed to win the nomination despite these attacks from within.
There is much tongue clucking amongst the mainstream media gurus in the aftermath of Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin. Was it hubris? Arrogance? Too much from a United States senator, who is a presidential candidate, but not yet (or perhaps never) President of the United States? I say no.
I think someone may have spiked my Diet Coke with something extra special tonight because tonight's diary prep went to 2 pages - again. Goody for us all - I hope!
So, let's Countdown for the night before payday for me!
A few weeks ago I made a high stakes bet with a Republican. The loser has to listen to 90 days of the winner's favorite radio talk show. In my case, I'd have to listen to Rush (EVERY day) and miss Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartmann. If I win, my Republican friend (yes, friend!) has to listen to Randi and Thomm. If my Obama poster fundraiser fails to get an average of 100 hits per 90 remaining ebay auctions, I lose.
Total hits so far: 874
Average hits per auction: 79
Biggest "hit" auction: 418 - the one auction linked to Kos!
I was searching through all my daily blog reading goodness today when I was caught quite off guard by a number of articles over at the Huffington Post. Now, I'm all for dissenting ideas and whatnot, but I usually feel more or less sure that HuffPost is going to have some agreeable and often funny blogs about everything going on. But today was a little different...
Before he left Israel, Barack Obama made an predawn visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. But his trip to the Jewish holy site was marred by heckling:
One man at the Wall began screaming: "Obama, Jerusalem is our land! Obama, Jerusalem is not for sale!"
Yeah. One guy. That's being marred by heckling? C'mooon....
I had to post this diary out of love. And respect. And admiration.
I clicked on Crooks and Liars this morning to check out what they were doing and saw this video about Christian the lion. A lion who was raised by humans, and then set free in Africa. That freedom didn't blot those humans out of his mind, as you can see from watching the video. Quite the opposite is true. The video shows that Christian remembers those humans, and loves them, still. While I watched I started to cry. I cried tears of joy. Tears of delight. Tears of hope. Amazing stuff.
This is not about supporting Barack Obama or any lack of support for John McCain. This is about a lack of respect for every soldier that has fought in, is fighting in and has given the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq. John McCain’s assertion that another elected official (Barack Obama) wants to intentionally lose the war in Iraq is absolutely the lowest of the low. How could any sensible man, elected official, presidential candidate, especially a veteran, say this about another elected official? His assertion is essentially an accusation of premeditated treason.
John McCain's gave an after lunch press conference today at a German Fudge House in Columbus Ohio while Barack Obama spoke before 200,000 in Berlin, Germany. Here's how it played in Columbus.
but maybe Obama should pick Hillary for VP. Just for background I was by no means a Hillary supporter during the primaries. McCain's been unloading some of the harshest attacks I can remember out of a nominee and Democrats (as usual) haven't been hitting back. Who is the meanest Democrat we all know ... Hillary (see I take Obama at his word on not being Muslim).
Hillary would immediatly secure Ohio, Pennsylvania (thought it might already be safe), and Michigan. She'd also narrow the gap / secure it in Florida and help with older women. More importantly though she would be the Spiro Agnew style attack dog that Democrats need. It would be pretty difficult to swallow after her attacks but if it secures a win putting HIllary on the ticket should be looked at.
Other Choices all have major negatives that are worse or equivelent to Hillary's
Biden - talks way too much, says dumb things, and 88' scandal / however good at fighting back
Bayh - too timid, boring / strong moderate resume though
Edwards - wouldn't attack in 04', been there done that / Stronger now?
Richardson - see Biden
Kaine, Sebelius - inexpierenced / mesh well with Obama though
CLINTON - scandals & Past Comments / fights back hard, popular with many Dems, $$$, Jewish voters + Seniors
